What is a Betting Exchange and how does it work?
In a regular sportsbook you bet against the bookmaker — but in a betting exchange you bet against other players. Here the odds are set by the market, meaning other users. The platform only takes a commission — no fixed margin.
There are two types of bets on an exchange: Back and Lay. Back means betting that a team will win. Lay means betting that a team will not win — meaning you take on the role of the bookmaker.
A simple example
Say Bangladesh's odds are 2.5 in a Bangladesh vs India match. If you Back with ৳1,000 and Bangladesh wins, you receive ৳2,500 (profit ৳1,500). If you Lay and Bangladesh loses, you win that ৳1,500 — but if Bangladesh wins, you have to pay it out. The platform deducts a small commission from the winning amount.
| Feature | Back | Lay |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Team will win | Team will not win |
| Role | Regular bettor | Bookmaker |
| Profit when | Team wins | Team loses or draws |
| Risk | Losing the stake | Liability |
| Commission | A small commission on winnings | |
Exchange vs regular sportsbook: odds on an exchange are generally better because market players set the odds — there is no bookmaker margin.
